Planes gaat over het kleine vliegtuigje Dusty Crophopper. Dusty belandt onverwachts in een "air race", ondanks dat hij last heeft van hoogtevrees en niet echt de bouw heeft voor zo'n gevaarlijke race. Met hulp van zijn mentor Skipper en wat andere vrienden gaat hij de spannende uitdaging toch aan.
